One of the toughest tasks when growing peppers is deciding which ones to grow. Without unlimited plots of land and resources, we really must consider our seed choices very strategically.

You gotta’ try everything at least once right, Skippy? Choosing pepper varieties is as much an art as it is a science. When we first embarked on this journey, we grew as many varieties as our back yard could accommodate. We’d recommend the same to anyone starting out.

At first, primary considerations included which peppers looked the coolest, gnarliest or were the easiest to find. That stage of the journey was a lot of fun. We tried as many varieties as we could afford/find and became super comfortable with the basics of growing.

Fast forward

Over the years, the total assortment of peppers we’ve grown has decreased, however; the total amount of plants has increased. With a little experience under your belt, you’ll start to pay attention to nuances in flavors, germination rates, hardiness, days to maturity, how prolific plants produce as well as things like how prone to disease and/or insects varieties are. That’s where we are now.
